YA Romantasy

Fifth Fjord by Isabel Marie
6 ⭐️ read!! Move over Fourth Wing 😅 Oh my gosh! First, the writing is fantastic. I was immediately pulled into this FMCs life, felt her ‘why’ in all this, and loved meeting the other characters in the academy she enters! There are so many aspects and tropes that I absolutely LOVED and won’t mention because I don’t want to spoil them for anyone… but they are all favorites of mine that I look for in a top Romantasy read. And, big feels. This one brings some big feels.
I love that the writing fully immersed me in a dangerous dark academia world with dynamic relationships between characters that bring both found family and rivaling enemies. You get a rich academia setting with both magic schooling and combat training. You also get a world filled with cultures and religions and history. Students go through a deadly dragon bonding trial, which comes with dangerous dragons and bonded mind speak.
Fi is an FMC I loved getting to read. She is smart and determined (which helps since she is not trained to be a strong fighter and is sent off to a dragon combat academy).
I really enjoyed the enemies/hate banter dynamic between the FMC and MMC and how that dynamic becomes more complicated along the way. And how that complication leads to some unrequited swoony gestures 🙌🏻🫠❤️🔥 and boy did I swoon hard.
The mysteries surrounding the FMCs family, the leaders, the students, and everything in between left plenty of room for curiosity and forming theories along the way. The whole time I was trying to figure out who was genuine and who would be a betrayer. I love that it kept me guessing and was delightfully unpredictable.
Be ready for some jaw drop moments and some twists along the way! This is definitely one of those books where I flipped back pages to reread scenes out of surprise or swoon. I definitely teared up multiple times. That ending 🥺 left me speechless! Honestly, I already know this book is going to be unforgettable.

This gives the found family, training, and dragons feels of Fourth Wing but with magical classes and spells mixed in and more deadly feeling like Hunger Games with the combat training tournaments the students endure. It’s a faster paced story than these book comps, and still has the character and relationship depth.
